What Does an Online Fitness Coach Actually Do? (A Real Week Inside)

By Maciej Nowicki · Updated 26 August 2026

An online fitness coach builds your training and nutrition around your life, reviews your real data every week, adjusts the plan from that evidence, and holds you accountable daily through an app and direct messages. The plan is about 20% of the job — this article shows you the other 80%, day by day.

Diagram of the weekly online coaching loop: you log your week, the coach reviews the data, the plan gets adjusted, daily accountability in between

Most articles answering this question are written by job sites explaining how to become a coach. I'm Mac — I've been one for nine years — and I'd rather show you what you'd actually be paying for. Here's a real week inside online coaching: what I do, what my clients do, and where the money goes.

The short answer: 20% plan, 80% coaching

The plan is the visible bit — training programme, calorie and protein targets, the app it all lives in. It's also the only part a £15 app can copy, which is why it's a minority of the job. The other 80% is a weekly loop of review, adjustment and accountability that runs whether your week went well or fell apart. That loop is the product.

What your online fitness coach does in a real week

Here's a composite week from my own coaching — no two weeks are identical, but every row here is something that genuinely happens:

A real week inside online fitness coaching
DayWhat I'm doingWhat you're doing
MondayReviewing weekend logs — the weekend tells me more than any other dataFirst session of the week, food back on structure
TuesdayForm reviews: watching your lift videos, sending correctionsTraining, logging food and weight in the app
WednesdayChecking in on anyone whose data looks like drift — before they message meSession two; midweek is where wobbles start
ThursdayRewriting programmes for clients whose progress has stalledTraining or rest — the plan knows which
FridayPre-weekend messages: the plan for the social, the meal out, the pintsGoing out and living — with the weekend planned in
SaturdayAnswering messages — the 'I'm at a wedding, what do I do?' textsReal life. The plan bends, it doesn't break
SundayWeekly 1-1 check-ins: your whole week reviewed, next week adjustedCheck-in with me: honest data, honest chat

And in between all of that: the unscheduled stuff. Tommy has messaged me at 11 o'clock at night — not for a macro tweak, just to talk, in the middle of the hardest year of his life. He'll tell you that access is what got him from 133kg to sub-90. His story's here.

What happens in a weekly check-in

The check-in is the engine of the whole thing, so here's exactly what mine covers:

Notice what's not on the list: judgement. A bad week is data, not a disciplinary. Clients who've been burned by shouty coaches are usually surprised by that — and it's exactly why they stop hiding bad weeks, which is when progress gets predictable.

What the app does vs what the human does

Division of labour between the coaching app and the coach
The app (Trainerize)The human (me)
Holds your programme with video run-throughs for every exerciseDecides what your programme should be, and changes it when your life or progress changes
Logs food, weight and training in one placeReads that data weekly and knows what it means
Reminds you a session is dueNotices when you've gone quiet and finds out why
Tracks the numbersJudges the trade-offs: push, hold, or bend the plan this week

What an online fitness coach is NOT

How to tell a real coach from a template seller

The word “coach” is unregulated, so the market is full of template businesses wearing the badge. Three tells:

FAQs: what an online fitness coach does

How often do you actually talk to an online fitness coach?
With me: a proper 1-1 check-in weekly, plus messages whenever you need them between — daily for some clients, quieter for others. If a coach's answer is "monthly", that's a template subscription with a human name on it.
Do online fitness coaches give you a meal plan?
Good ones mostly don't — they set calorie and protein targets around food you actually eat, which survives real life far better than a rigid plan. If you want help hitting protein, my free Lean Mean Protein Machine guide does exactly that.
How does an online coach check your exercise form?
You film your working sets on your phone and send them through the app; I review them and send corrections, often with a voice note. It's not hands-on like in-person PT — but it means your form gets reviewed on your real lifts, in your real gym, not just once in a session.
Does online coaching work for beginners?
Yes, with one caveat: if you've never touched a barbell, a few in-person sessions to groove the big lifts are worth having first or alongside. What beginners actually fail at is consistency, not technique — and consistency is the exact thing coaching fixes.
What's included in Mac's coaching specifically?
Personalised training and nutrition in the Trainerize app, weekly 1-1 check-ins with me, daily access between them, form reviews and a client community — the full inclusions and price are here, stated plainly.
